ODC Dance Downtown Program B

Provided by ODC Dance

Dance Downtown’s B program features Amy Seiwert’s world premiere, No Alibi. In No Alibi, Amy Seiwert’s exploration of the art of Leonard Cohen centers her words, weaving classic Cohen recordings with covers by Roberta Flack, Nina Simone and Joe Cocker. Cohen was right, it can be heard from his “Tower of Song” after his death in 2016. His iconic songs are still being reinvented, keeping his art alive and evolving in the pop lexicon. Although reminiscent of an era, his poetry expresses a timeless vision of joy, longing and sorrow.

Seiwert says, “I often say that dance expresses what words cannot contain. But some poets’ words contain worlds. A line of verse can hit viscerally. That feeling, that moment of impact, is the point start of the connection.”

The program concludes with the NEA’s American masterpiece Investigating Grace, choreographed by ODC Founder and Artistic Director Brenda Way. A deeply personal work, Investigating Grace is a brilliant reflection on the vicissitudes of life danced to Glenn Gould’s youthful and intense interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
