Mickey Yatar Claims a Place in Global Street Dance

Baguio City pride Mickey Yatar wins the right to represent the Philippines at the ‘Dance Your Style’ World Finals in Johannesburg, South Africa

MANILA, Philippines — Mickey Yatar left everything on the dance floor to dominate the Red Bull Dance Your Style National Final and earn the right to represent the Philippines at this year’s World Final.

The Baguio City pride was crowned street dance champion in front of fellow runner-up Carlos “Taz” Naval Jr. on July 23 at the Bonifacio Amphitheater.

As he prepares to represent the country in the international dance event, Yatar said he plans to consult the top 16 dancers, each one living up to the hype with their pure skills in the national finals.

“The most important thing in my head is to check out the Top 16. They all have good ideas because some of them are my teachers and closest friends,” Yatar said. “I want to consult them and get more advice from them for my preparation.”

Yatar is set to take on the best dancers in the world at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Finals in Johannesburg, South Africa in December.

Yatar, 30, who also won a pan-Asian competition in Bali, Indonesia, hopes to inspire more young street dancers.

“Just start. Just start without comparing yourself. That’s the first thing,” he said. “And then the second thing is to take it easy. Take your time and enjoy kasi marami kayo matutunan (you will learn a lot). Find people you can trust who will help you be open to feedback.
