AUÄ Artistic Director Vivian Arthur Aue Shares Favorite Vacation Memories
What do you miss most about traveling right now?
The feeling of getting on the plane and sitting on a plane ready to take off.
What are your fondest memories of the first trip abroad you took?
My first trip was Rarotonga and my strongest memories are seeing my ancestral homeland and meeting family members I had heard of but never seen before.
What was a standard family vacation like growing up?
We barely went on a family vacation which was fine with me as the vacation was spent with our extended family here in Auckland.
Who inspired your travels the most?
I am inspired by my family. I always do what I do for my family because they gave me the basics and the opportunities to do it.
What’s the best trip you’ve ever taken?
Every time I come back to Fiji it is always a good time. Seeing friends and being among and immersed in Fijian culture is always an amazing time.
And the worst ?
No worse destination here. There is always a good atmosphere everywhere.
What’s your approach to packing for a big trip?
Always pack extra clothes, you never know what’s going to happen – yes, my suitcase is overweight all the time.
Which destination surprised you the most – good or bad?
Bali was awesome. I loved the atmosphere and maneuvering around the markets and making deals with the traders was fun
Where was your most memorable sunrise / sunset?
Sydney, New Years 2016, on a cliff near Bondi Beach. Relaxing with my family and knowing that I was surrounded by my loved ones.
What’s the first thing you do on your way home from a long trip?
Kiss my mom, who I always miss when I’m away from New Zealand, then catch up on sleep.
What do you miss most about home when you travel?
The food and the air here in New Zealand are the best.
What is the destination that you must see in your life?
What do you like best about traveling?
Airplane food – I really enjoy it! And knowing if a South Pacific kid from Auckland can travel to all of these destinations, other South Pacific kids from Auckland can too.
